Overall Progress (started just left to "A" in Sunday on Oct,. 31)
We are at the top Blue Dot in Beaufort NC headed south to Ft. Myers Beach.

Hello all,

We have been out for over a week so far and have made it as far as Beaufort North Carolina.  The winds are gusty today and there is heavy rain expected all day tomorrow.  We have found quiet waters at Homer Smith Brothers Dock and Seafood marina in Beaufort North Carolina and are planning to stay here until Tuesday morning. Cruising weather while overcast and drizzly at times has been good for the first week.  Our roughest spots were in the Chesapeake Bay leaving last week.  We  have gotten into a routine and basically on good weather days try to cruise from 7am - 4 or 5 depending on our destination port for the day.  In the evenings we are usually anchored in safe spot,  fixing a dinner and  studying the charts to determine travel for the next day or so also planning for fuel fill ups,  food and other supplies and laundry. We made good progress over the past two days traveling 150 miles.  The Inter coastal waterway is beautiful and we are intermittently crossing sounds that are wider than the canals  and have a tendency to be rougher. Another factor in the planning is the timing of bridges and locks.  If you miss a bridge, it could cost you hours.  We are about 25 -30%  toward our final destination of Ft. Myers Beach.

Yesterday, we left Belhaven and traveled  through  the Hobucken Bridge then across the Pamlico Sound.  We anticipated rough travels through the Sound, but it turned out to be a nice chop and made cruising it a pleasant trip.  Some of the towns along the way are like a step back in time and I mean a BIG step back in time.  In Elizabeth City for example,  while in the local pharmacy, we observed Bryl Cream on the shelf and then heard a sound we haven't heard for so many years...a typewriter in active use for labeling their prescriptions!

See below the picture of the Marine Supply Store we passed near the Hobucken Bridge.  It reminded me of a store front from the 1950s.  The town we are in now dates back to the 1700s and is very reminiscent of the Civil War days.  Lots of historic buildings and quaint store fronts make up the town in addition to the commercial seafood businesses.  We are staying at a Marina that purchases and distributes fresh seafood across the country.    We toured the area where it is unloaded,  weighed then packed with lots of ice to get to our friends in the North after summertime crab season. While this is a wholesale house I was able to get the the owners son to sell us 2 lbs of fresh grouper for  a few dinners this week.

We hope everyone is well,  enjoy the pictures and we will post again soon.

  1. Thanks for sharing. The photos are lovely and I don't think Dismal Swamp looks so dismal.
